Classical construction cuddled in Luojia Hill

Luojia Hill (珞珈山)lies at the center of Wuchang District; it's a chain of more than ten hillocks that sit along the southwest coast of East Lake. It forms the natural background of Wuhan University (WHU). The 118.5-meter-high peak of Luojia Hill is the highest peak south of East Lake. Standing on top of it, you have a panoramic view of East Lake and part of the city. The former villas of historical figures like the former premier Zhou Enlai, the great poet Guo Moruo and the novelist Yu Dafu are situated amid the rocks and woods.

The oriental cherry trees of WHU are famous. In September of 1933, WHU began building its arboretum by planting 19 coniferous species and 215 deciduous species; and it received donations of more than 800 woody plants and herbaceous plants from the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, the British Royal Botanic Gardens, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan. In 1946, WHU began to bring in large numbers of saplings from Shennongjia in Hubei, Mount Huangshan in Anhui, Mount Lushan in Jiangxi, Yunnan, and Guizhou Provinces.

Rare stones that you can typically find on Mount Huangshan, Yandang Mountain in Zhejiang, and Mount Laoshan in Shandong can also be seen on Luojia Hill. There's a water tower on top of Luojia Hill that looks a lot like a Buddhist pagoda. From the area where the tower is located, you have access to incredible views of East Lake. The blue sky, woody hills on the other side, and the slow moving sails of boats are all reflected in the vast mirror of water.
