How to get a driving license in Wuhan?

Until 2017, the number of foreigners living in Hubei Province has reached 19,000. In this article, we will introduce the procedures for obtaining the Chinese driving license (C) in Wuhan City for foreigners.

I. Foreigners who do not have a driving license


If you are over 18 years of age, you have a temporary or permanent residency permit and you don’t have a driver’s license from another qualified country, you can get a driver’s license here.


Step 1: You need to go to the traffic management office and submit an application.

Step 2: You have to attend a driving school. There are some driving schools which specialize in foreigners or which accept foreigners. There are even some could allow you to bring along a translator. It normally takes 2 to 4 months and at least 5,000 Yuan (fees, theory classes and on-road practice).

Step 3: You have to complete written exams and road test in the driving school. Suject 1: Written exam on laws and traffic regulations and basic concepts on vehicles(100 questions and you should achieve a correct rate of more than 90%); Subject 2: Parking and basic driving skills test on a track; Subject 3: Road test; Subject 4: Written exam on correct driving habits (50 questions);

Note: Each exam can be taken twice. If you fail, you will have to pay the fees again and wait at least 20 days.

Necessary documents:

- Passport and residency permit with at least 3 months of validity (original and photo copy).

- Record of temporary residency obtained at the local police station (original and photo copy).

- Medical certificate (normally this can be obtained in the same place).

- Three to five one-inch color photos with a white background.

II. Foreigner who have obtained a driving license from home country

If you already have a driver's license from your home country and you want to convert that to a Chinese driver's license in Wuhan, the process is not very complicated. All you need to do is submit your application, register, and take a written test.

Step 1: Submit your application to Wuhan Vehicle Administration Office in Wuchang District (武汉市公安局交通 管理局车辆管理所)

Address: Special 8, Youyi Avenue, Wuchang District, near Sha Lake.

How to get there:

Bus: 543, 554, 573, 777, 795, 802, 811, 817, get off at the station 友谊 大道 航海 学院

Step 2: Pay a fee of 120 yuan and pass the driving license examination (Step 1 above) at the Wuhan Vehicle Administration Bureau Examination Center in Wangjiawan, Hanyang District.

How to get there:

Metro: lines 3 and 4, get off at Wangjiawan Station (王家湾)

Bus: 26, 106, 266, 383, 390, 575, 597, 735, get off at Hanyang Avenue Haomeijia Stop (汉阳大道好美家)

Step 3: Get your Chinese driving license at the Wuhan Vehicle Administration Bureau in Wuchang District (武汉市 公安局交通管理局车辆管理所).

Necessary documents:

-Your ID (Passport) (original and photocopy).

-Your driver's license in your country of origin (original and photocopy)

-A certified translation of your original driver's license

- Temporary residence file obtained at the local police headquarters (original and photocopy).

-Your student card or work permit (original and photocopy)

Note: Holders of driving licenses in the United Arab Emirates and Belgium may directly convert their original driving licenses to a Chinese license. Only Belgium and the United Arab Emirates can benefit from this advantage.
