Hanbei River gets its name due to that it is located on the north bank of Hanjiang River. As a major branch of downstream Hanjiang River, the main stream is 242 kilometers long (56 km in Xiaogan city) with more than 20 branches. Most branches of Hanbei River are distributed on the left bank.

Originated form 450-meter-high Wujialing in Jingshan County, Hanbei River flows across Zhongxiang, Tianmen, Xiaogan, Yingcheng, Hanchuan, Yunmeng, and joins Hanjiang in Wuhan Xingou. The slope of river is 0.22‰ and the drainage area is 6304 square kilometers.
