Songbai, a town in Shennongjia Forestry District, was labeled ‘slow city’ by Cittaslow on June 22, becoming the first member of this global network in Hubei Province and the 9th in China.

Tucked down in northeast Shennongjia, Songbai Town covers an area of 336.32 square kilometers and has a population of 28,000. It enjoys forest coverage of 91.4 percent and always gives priority to green development.

Cittaslow, also known as the International Network of Cities Where Living is Good, is an international movement of towns that have adopted a common set of principles and objectives to enhance their quality of life. Membership of Cittaslow is open to towns with less than 50,000 residents. Towns must undergo a strenuous accreditation process to be recognized as Cittaslow members. (en.hubei.gov.cn)
