British PM Theresa May visits Wuhan

British Prime Minister Theresa May arrived in Wuhan, capital city of central China’s Hubei Province, on January 31, starting her first official visit to China.

May made a whirlwind visit to Wuhan, the first stop of her official visit to China. During her packed stay here, she visited Wuhan University, the Yellow Crane Tower, watched Peking Opera performance and toured to the Yangtze River side.

Promoting exchanges with China in education and environmental conservation has been among the major highlights of Theresa May's stay in Wuhan. She hoped youth from the two countries will communicate more and cooperate further to build a better future.

This year marks the 46th anniversary of ambassadorial diplomatic relations between the two nations. May is the sixth British prime minister to visit China, following David Cameron's two trips to China in 2013 and 2010.

A quick look at cooperation between Hubei and UK

1. Education

Education remains a top Sino-British pursuit. At present, the UK and Hubei has carried out cooperation in the basic education of colleges and universities, sports education and vocational training.

2. Britain's Princess Anne pays first visit to Hubei

On the evening of July 5, Britain's Princess Anne arrived in Wuhan, capital city of central China's Hubei Province, for a friendly visit.

Princess Anne visited the Wuhan Institute of Hydrobiology on July 6, with the aim of strengthening cooperation between the Institute and Zoological Society of University College London in protecting porpoises and also visited the Wuhan Business University to promote exchanges between the Britain and Hubei institutions in the field of equestrian training.

3. Cooperation between Wuhan and its sister-city Manchester

Wuhan signed a series of cooperation agreements with Manchester, UK, on March 26, 2015 to carry out extensive cooperation in fields of sustainable development, smart city, culture, education, football, etc.

According to the agreements, the two cities will form closer business ties in fields of advanced manufacture and engineering, originality, digital and new media, medical treatment and health care, etc.

Besides, both sides will jointly held modern art exhibitions and historical works exhibition, and start cooperation centered on football.

Educational cooperation programs will also be launched between middle and primary schools and universities in Wuhan and Manchester. Both sides will also work on an overarching theme of smart and sustainable urbanization, including air quality and pollution control, rubbish purification and management, water quality and sewage management, clean coal technology, etc.
