Six breathtaking roads and bridges in Hubei

Recently, Hubei has added two scenic roads, namely, the updated long waist (Baren River tourism) road in Badong County and a 500-meter-long plank road built over the river in Xuan’en County. This passage will introduce another six breathtaking roads and bridges in central China’s Hubei.

1. Sidu River Bridge

Highest bridge in the world

The Sidu River Bridge (Siduhe Bridge, 四渡河特大桥) is a 1,222 m-long (4,009 ft) suspension bridge crossing the valley of the Sidu River near Yesanguan in Badong County of the Hubei Province of the People's Republic of China. The bridge was designed by CCSHCC Second Highway Consultants Company, Ltd. and built at a cost of 720 million yuan (approximately US$100 million). It opened to traffic on November 15, 2009.

The bridge is part of the new G50 Huyu Expressway that parallels China National Highway 318, an east-west route between Shanghai and Chongqing, crossing the wide belt of mountains that separate the Sichuan Basin from the lowlands of eastern Hubei.

The bridge spans a 500-meter (1,600 ft) deep valley of the Sidu River (a left tributary of the Qingjiang River), and has superseded the Royal Gorge Bridge and the Beipan River Guanxing Highway Bridge as the highest bridge in the world.

The bridge's design includes H-shaped towers, a truss-stiffened main span, and unsuspended side spans. The first part of the suspension cable installed, a rope known as the pilot cable, was the first-ever to be placed using a rocket.

2. Hanging Road in Enshi

Shuangmu Road in Enshi, which is built against sheer cliffs, links Shuanghe village with Muliyuan village, which have a distance of 800 meters in altitude. The 20 km country road, hanging and winding on a mountain, is nicknamed the “Sky Road” in Hubei.

Organized by the automobile brand Jeep, nationwide road trip lovers drove over 160 SUVs on the “Sky Road” on Aug. 11, 2015.

3. Gufu-Zhaojunqiao Highway

Most beautiful road on water

To avoid destroying a forest, authorities have built a 10.9-kilometer road linking Gufu to Zhaojunqiao in Xingshan County, Central China's Hubei province, which completely bypasses the nearby mountain. Two stretches of the project are two bridges, altogether 4.4km, built over two rivers.

The road is built over the Xiangxi River and the reservoir of a local hydropower station, both part of the Three Gorges Reservoir region. It is the first ecological highway over water in China and also the only highway over water in Hubei. With beautiful landscape around it, the project is also called "the most beautiful road on water", Aug 9, 2015.

The road has made the journey easier in Xingshan County, which is located in the Three Gorges Reservoir region in Hubei. Only passenger buses and small vehicles are allowed to travel on the section that runs above the water.

4. Glass walkway in Tiantangzhai scenic spot

First high-altitude glass walkway in Hubei

Located in Luotian Tiantangzhai scenic area, the first high-altitude glass walkway in Hubei opened to visitors in August, 2015.

This is the 4th high-altitude glass walkway in China following that in Tianmen Mountain, Baishi Mountain and Tianyun Mountain, also the first in central China’s Hubei.

Located in main peak of Dabie Mountain, Luotian Tiantangzhai scenic area features unique scenery which is grand, rare, perilous and elegant. The construction of the glass walkway, which is 1.8 meters in width and 70 meters in length, takes one year. The walkway also serves as part of the 4th sightseeing loop line in Tiantangzhai, and will enhance the capacity of the scenic area.

5. Trestle road along cliff in Qingjiang Fangshan scenic area

With a total length of 6,300 meters, the trestle road along cliff in Qingjiang Fangshan scenic area in central China’s Hubei is the longest of its kind in the world.

The road started constructed on Oct. 28, 2013 with a total investment of more than 80 million yuan. On June 18, 2015, the whole road, with 1.5 meters in width and 8, 000 meters in length, was finished.

According to static load test, the trestle road can bear 500 kg/ sq.m., five times more than that of state standard.

6. Road around the Danjiangkou Reservoir

An eco-environment protection road

The road around the Danjiangkou Reservoir is an eco-environment protection one that stretches across Danjiangkou city, Yun county, Yunxi county and Wudang Mountains special zone.

With a total length of 429 kilometers, the road is built into a green gallery with thousands mu of rape flowers.
