On May 21, in Kuwait, the International Military Sports Council (Counseil International du Sport Militaire, CISM) announced that the 7th Military World Games (MWG) will be held in Wuhan. This event will be the most prestigious international sporting event that Wuhan has ever hosted. >>more

One of the reasons why Wuhan was chosen to host this event is that the city has 88 high-end stadiums and sports facilities. These facilities can meet the needs of the various MWG events. For this reason, the organizers of many important sporting events have chosen Wuhan for major international sporting events.

This year, more than 10 international sporting events, including the WTA Wuhan Open, Asian Athletics Championships, and the FIBA Asia Championship for Women, will be held here. As the sports capital for Central China, the city is only surpassed by Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou nationwide.

Wuhan is also part of a joint bid with Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and four other Chinese cities to host the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup. According to reports from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), China is the lead candidate. If selected, local sports fans will be able to enjoy both professional military sporting events and world-class men’s basketball games right here.

In late September, the 2015 Wuhan Open, a WTA Premier 5 tournament, will kick off at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center. The majority of the top 10 professional female tennis players are expected to participate in this event. This fall, the spotlight will once again be on Wuhan as tennis fans around the world gather here, and in front of their televisions, to watch the matches.
